Nothing has been more helpful to me in my sexual recovery process than hearing the stories of others.

I have gone to sexual recovery support groups for the last 2 years.  Every week, guys share their struggles, challenges, failures and successes.  They share parts of their stories.

I have listened to countless podcasts on sexual recovery and purity and read many books.  These are places where people share their stories.

And now my wife and I get emails every week from people who feel comfortable sharing their stories with us.

WHAT STORIES DO FOR ME

Remind me that I’m not alone – It’s not hard to feel alone in the struggle.  I think that I’m the only person who ever has these struggles.  Hearing other’s stories reminds me that many others have problems too.

Help me identify with others – When people share their stories, it’s amazing how many parallel experiences and feelings we share.

It could be worse – Some were deeper in their addiction and had greater consequences.  I realize that if God hadn’t stopped me, I very easily could have gotten worse.

But maybe my experience was worse than someone’s story… I still could have been worse.  There is no judging here.  I just realize that without the grace of God, my life could be in a much bigger mess, or I could be dead.

It can be better – Others have been through the bad stuff and it has gotten better.  That can be me and my situation.  I can get better.  Other’s stories give me hope for my present situation.

Reminder of consequences, pain, frustration, and mess – I need to remember the destruction that lust and sexual addiction takes me.

Reminder of victory, healing, growth, and breakthroughs – I also need to remember where my life will go if I pursue recovery.

Long journey of recovery – When I hear guys who have been in group for 3, 5, 8 years, I am reminded that I have to keep working on this stuff.  I can never let up in my recovery.

THE POWER OF YOUR STORY
Have you started sharing your story yet?  Even with a counselor?  Your story is incredibly powerful!  You will grow tremendously when you share your story.  You will grow when you start hearing other’s stories.
