So let’s do a little checkup right now to see how serious we are. Let’s be reminded of some things that will help us stick with the plan.
These checkups apply to those attending Support Groups, but these indicators also apply to anyone who is serious about working through a problem.
DEPTH OF THE HURT – the deeper the loss, the harder a person will work to make it right. If a man has been kicked out of the house because of his infidelity, he knows he has a lot to lose. I lost my job and my ministry because of my porn addiction. It was the slap I needed to make me really serious about getting right.
FEEL THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR SIN – It seems that those who are sticking with their recovery always keep on eye on where they’ve come from. They also remind are conscious of the consequences to their own lives and to the lives of those they hurt by their actions. People who are less serious blame others for their actions. They rationalize and minimize their behavior.
COMMITMENT TO THE WORK – A serious person does what it takes to get better. He is constantly facing the pain, talking about it, seeking help. He is going to counseling. He is reading recovery material. He always seems to be pushing to work on the next phase of recovery.
ABILITY TO PUSH THROUGH FAILURES – Failures happen. A person working toward sexual purity will have lots of ups and downs. The serious person is learning to work through these failures. He is learning that having failures, doesn’t make him a failure as a person, it makes him normal. Whoever comes to group every week and doesn’t talk about struggles and challenges is not very serious about the getting better.
SUBMISSION TO GOD AND OTHERS – The serious person knows he is not the expert. He has messed up and needs others to help him get healthy. He submits to their guidance and leadership. God is the most important One to submit to. He is the ultimate expert when it comes to being serious about sexual purity.
LEVEL OF SUPPORT – This goes along with submitting to others. The person serious about recovery realizes he can’t do it alone. He has tried many times and failed. He has realized that he needs a support group in place: friends, pastor, counselors, family, wife, support group.
To be supported, we need to have people in our lives who are cheering for us. We need people who know our junk and love us anyway.
